What I'm doing now that NATA's over

Posted by Pahgawk - October 16th, 2012

As you probably know, NATA is over now, and after a close final round, Emrox has emerged victorious, and the guy deserves it. Here's his video:

...and, in case you're interested, here was mine.

I guess because so much has changed since the start of NATA, I should probably take a paragraph to reflect. The other day, I edited a new showreel for myself to include all the stuff I've done since last December, when I uploaded my last showreel:

It's not the greatest, but when you compare it with my showreel from last year, you can see that it's improved a fair amount. If there's one thing I definitely got from my experience this year, it's that I experimented a lot with my animations. That never hurts, right? Also, I have a vastly different work ethic since I started NATA. Due to the nature of the competition, I got used to having almost constant work. I think I'm able to completely focus on things for extended periods of time (six months, in this case) because I feel like it's good for me and also that it will make relaxing afterwards feel even better. I can now say that yes, being able to focus and work is a really good skill to have, and yes, last night was the first night in months when I did nothing (with the exception of editing that demo reel, but it didn't take too much time or effort so that doesn't count) and it was glorious.

So anyway, what now?

I don't have a shiny new demo reel for no reason. I think I mentioned in an earlier news post that I'm going to be making a music video next, and I think that maybe this will start the ball rolling for some more commissioned animations in the year to come. Or at least until the next NATA.

You may or may not know that I do web design work, so that will resume again now as well.

I also have been learning 3D animation on the side for a while now. Don't go looking for a 3D video of mine yet, because all my previous ones aren't very good. If an opportunity arises, maybe you'll see a new, improved, fully 3D animation from me. Who knows.

Lastly, I also want to spend some time programming. Although I spend so much time doing animation, I don't actually think it's the career path I want to go into. I am definitely not giving up animation, because I love it; however, I think animation will just remain a hobby of mine. Instead, I will probably be going to university for computer science or software engineering or something like that. (Side note: Although I don't have to apply to university for another year, I am starting to look. If anyone has any advice or insight about Canadian universities with programs that I might be interested in, I'm all ears!) So this past weekend, I programmed a game for the Game Jam. I'm pretty proud of how it turned out, since I initially wasn't sure if I'd be able to be any good at making games so quickly. It was definitely a fun experience and I hope to participate in the next one, too.

Although, I might not be doing game programming. In one round of NATA, I programmed a simple little program to take your progress on an animation and project how much you need to do to finish on time. It's neat making things that actually are useful. Sometime in the future, I plan to make a more advanced adaptation of that program that lets you make storyboards, and then check off your progress from there. I'm not sure when I'll have the time, though, since I guess I'm a pretty busy guy, but it'll happen eventually.

Uhhh, that sounds neat, a program that lets you do storyboars and then calculates the progress, nice!!!

Right now all I have is a little drawing application, but saving the images isn't hard, and storing them along with information about how long each shot lasts shouldn't be hard either. I just need to program it so you can change the order of scenes and also play it back and such. And if I can, maybe figure out how to use tablet pressure. And then add the algorithms from the progress tracking program.

I think you have a really bright future ahead! Being a programmer who embraces animation will make you fun to work with if you end up in the game industry.

Now that NATA is over it's cool that you can look back at this huge body of work from the past six months - there are kids coming out of college for animation who have smaller portfolios than you do now. Keep us in the loop as everything progresses from here!

Thanks!
...well, I am not sure if I'll actually be able to upload the music video here when it's done, so I might just have to make a news post about it. We'll have to see. But whenever I can, I'll be sure to keep Newgrounds in the loop! :)

I did expect that Emrox would win with DAT animation. However, I feel yours had a better concept.

Interesting... animating as a hobby, then go for a bachelor's degree for programming (not really, but close). Tom's right! I took first the math route on school (being a nerd or sth), but haven't finished college yet XD. Good that you live in Canada, good universities there, believe it or not!

thanks!
And yeah, my problem is that I can't decide where to go because there are a lot of good options. As far as university problems go, it's a pretty good problem to have!

Its true ive been watching you from a far the past year, your work has gone from "yeah it's good but nothing "amazing" to wow that's some solid animation!! Congrats and Good luck, you are a good animator.

thanks!

I echo what the boss said. I cant tell you how much easier it is to work with programmers that understand and appreciate the animation world. The whole process just goes smoother when you make a game. From making test engines and stuff.

right, I guess so! I haven't ever actually made a game with animators other than myself before the game jam, but that seemed to go smoothly enough. If I ever have an actual good idea for a game (which might not happen for a long while), hopefully this experience will help!

i think you might be on to something really good with the progress checker program, i know time management is a huge issue for myself when animating. if you developed it to the point where it ran in conjunction with flash (if that's even possible) that would be awesome.

Well I am not sure that I can make it run in conjunction with Flash because I'm not sure how to handle it if people don't animate their scenes in order (like I usually get the audio done, and then maybe work on bits and pieces in the middle of the timeline.) What I'm doing instead is making a program that lets you make storyboards and play them back in real time, and then check off the scenes as you go (like for each scene you can check whether you have done sound for it, animated it, coloured it, and made the background.) And then based on how much of each scene is checked off and how long the scene is, at calculates the time left.

You did great! Very very impressive stuff. We should work on something together some time, if you'd be interested ;)

At your age, what you've accomplished and the fact that you have goals in mind is a lot more than most. So I'm gonna say you should feel pretty good about yourself.

I'm gonna have to try the progress program too!
