I can promise AS2 can do almost everything that AS3 can do, it's just that AS3 runs in a slightly faster VM.
Also, yes, I can easily make a swarm based on _xmouse and _ymouse

Not entirely true, but largely, yes, AS2 can do a lot of what AS3 can. But AS3 is much faster with many objects moving onscreen at once, such as particles.
Also, knowing how to do something is not quite the same as actually doing, applying and using it. Just sayin'.
